This week at the loch - 29/08/2025

Two weeks back at school and we have the first illness of the term already. The 8yo is poorly and home from school. So the routine is disrupted almost before we’ve properly settled back into it. I’ve been a bit under the weather this week too, with a mild fibro flare (if there is such a thing). So it feels like I haven’t achieved much as I’ve been slower moving than usual.

The air is turning cooler here, and some of the leaves are beginning to take on their autumn hues. Soon it will be time to start making soups and stews again and I’m looking forward to it. Before that, though, the brambles are ripening, so as soon as everyone is well enough, we’ll be going bramble picking along the river and making a crumble with our bounty.

Rowan berries are out in abundance all around where I live, and they always bring out a memory of a family friend who took me out foraging as a kid and made jams and jellies from the berries we found. Sadly, that friend passed away last year, so this year the fond memories are tinged with grief. Jessie was a woman who brought light wherever she went and some of my happiest memories from childhood are of visiting her and of being in nature with her.

What I’m working on - I haven’t really managed to write at all this week, which has been sad. Lots of BFS admin, including a few urgent things, and I finished the beta read.

What I’m reading - Never Flinch by Stephen King. I know some fans are not keen on the Holly Gibney stories, but I really enjoy them. I think she’s a great character, and the books read like classic King, with that attention to detail and character that I love so much.

What I’m watching - This week’s History Hit has covered everything from Alexander the Great, to the Vikings, to Georgian era Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. I definitely feel like I’ve had value from my subscription, and I’ve only had it for about a month.

What I’m listening to - Still Halestorm.
