This week at the loch - 03/10/2025
I have finally, mostly, recovered from my bout of illness. I’ve spent most of the last two weeks trying to catch up with various work projects, as well as preparing for this year’s BFS AGM, which will take place at World Fantasy Convention. I’m really looking forward to the event, and catching up with so many colleagues and friends for the first time since last year.
Preparations for the launch of Daughters of Nicnevin are well underway, with the first event taking place tomorrow as part of the BFS Online: Something Monstrous event. If you’ve never been to one of these events before, it’s well worth joining in. There are panels, readings and interviews, all over Zoom, with plenty of breaks for chatting with the other attendees. They’re great fun, free for members and only £5 for non-members. More information can be found here :BFS Online: Something Monstrous – The British Fantasy Society
The other bog thing that happened this week is that I launched a new initiative in partnership with my friend and BFS colleague, David Green. Divergent Paths is a non-profit organisation that seeks to support and advocate for neurodivergent people working in publishing. We’re in the very early stages of building this organisation and we’re very keen to hear from neurodivergent people in publishing about what resources they would like to see, and how we can best work to build new paths.
We’d also love to hear from publishers, editors, agents, and anyone else who would like to partner with us in this venture. You can find out more and join our mailing list here: Divergent Paths
What I’m working on - This week has been mostly BFS admin, as well as editing work, so not much writing. I have made some progress on Rise of a Witch Queen though. I’m really enjoying how its shaping up.
What I’m reading - Thief Mage, Beggar Mage by Cat Hellisen. Hellisen is one of those writers whose work I will buy without even reading the blurb. They have such a gorgeous way with prose, and I really enjoy the complex characters,
What I’m watching - The final season of Star Trek: Voyager, interspersed with History Hit, most recently an episode about the Picts and one about Boudicca.
What I’m listening to - Nothing much this week. Just the rain drumming on the roof
Something Interesting - Really enjoyed this short story from Adrian Tchaikovsky, set in the same world as Service Model, which i haven’t read yet. Human Resources - Reactor
